COLD MOUNTAIN **** (R/2:35/12-25-03) Minghella makes a Mountain out of a Nicole hill.
Nominated for: Best Actor (Jude Law), Best Supporting Actress (Renée Zellweger), Cinematography, Film Editing, Original Score, Original Song ("Scarlet And Tide," written by T Bone Burnett and Elvis Costello), Original Song ("You Will Be My Ain True Love," written by Sting).
Won: Best Supporting Actress (Renée Zellweger).
 
THE COOLER **** (R/1:41/11-26-03) Macy heats up the screen as a professional loser who suffers a lucky streak.
Nominated for: Best Supporting Actor (Alec Baldwin).
 
FINDING NEMO ***** (G/1:41/5-30-03) Fish’s fretful father finds friends, fights foes in funny family fantasy.
Nominated for: Best Animated Feature, Original Screenplay (Andrew Stanton, Bob Peterson, David Reynolds), Original Score, Sound Editing.
Won: Best Animated Feature.
 
GIRL WITH A PEARL EARRING **** (PG-13/1:35/12-26-03) Servant girl gets in Dutch with famous painter.
Nominated for: Art Direction, Cinematography, Costume Design.
 
HOUSE OF SAND AND FOG *** (R/2:06/12-26-03) Finely crafted House story built on shaky foundation.
Nominated for: Best Actor (Ben Kingsley), Best Supporting Actress (Shohreh Aghdashloo), Original Score.
 
IN AMERICA ****½ (PG-13/1:47/5-8-03) Irish family seeks fortune, solace, acceptance in U.S., as does their film.
Nominated for: Best Actress (Samantha Morton), Best Supporting Actor (Djimon Hounsou), Original Screenplay (Jim Sheridan, Naomi Sheridan, Kirsten Sheridan).
 
LORD OF THE RINGS: RETURN OF THE KING ***** (PG-13/3:21/ 12-17-03) A crowning achievement.

MASTER AND COMMANDER: THE FAR SIDE OF THE WORLD ****½ (PG-13/2:18/11-14-03) Nice.

Won: Cinematography, Sound Editing.
 
MONSTER ****½ (R/1:51/12-26-03) Theron shows grit, which will come in handy when polishing her gold.
Nominated for: Best Actress (Charlize Theron).

MYSTIC RIVER **** (R/2:17/10-15-03) Clint Eastwood’s latest treatise on justified violence.
Nominated for: Best Picture, Best Actor (Sean Penn), Best Supporting Actor (Tim Robbins), Best Supporting Actress (Marcia Gay Harden), Directing (Clint Eastwood), Adapted Screenplay (Brian Helgeland).
Won: Best Actor (Sean Penn), Best Supporting Actor (Tim Robbins).
 
PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN: THE CURSE OF THE BLACK PEARL ****½ (PG-13/2:23/7-9-03)
If these titles get any longer, I’m going to have to rethink my format.

SEABISCUIT **** (PG-13/2:21/7-25-03) Horse teaches jockey (and America) about come-from-behind victories.

SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE ***½ (PG-13/2:18/12-4-03) You Gotta Give Jack & Diane credit for Something.
Nominated for: Best Actress (Diane Keaton).
 
21 GRAMS ****½ (R/2:05/12-26-03) Oscar-nominated drama is definitely no lightweight.
Nominated for: Best Actress (Naomi Watts), Best Supporting Actor (Benicio Del Toro).
